What are Bilateral Rib Fractures?

Bilateral rib fractures refer to fractures that occur on both sides of the ribcage. These types of fractures are typically the result of significant trauma and can be more severe than single-side rib fractures due to the increased risk of complications.

Symptoms:

  • Severe Pain: On both sides of the chest, especially with breathing, coughing, or movement.
  • Difficulty Breathing: Pain may lead to shallow breathing, increasing the risk of lung complications.
  • Bruising or Swelling: Visible signs of trauma on both sides of the ribcage.
  • Chest Wall Instability: If multiple ribs are broken on both sides, the chest wall may become unstable.
