Why excessive sweating happens during sleep?

Excessive sweating during sleep, also known as night sweats, occurs when the body produces more sweat than necessary to regulate temperature. Here are some common reasons why it happens:

1. Hormonal Changes

  • Menopause: Hot flashes and hormonal fluctuations are common causes in women.
  • Hormonal Disorders: Conditions like hyperthyroidism can overstimulate sweat glands.

2. Infections

  • Tuberculosis and HIV are well-known causes of night sweats.
  • Other infections, including bacterial or viral illnesses, can trigger fever and sweating.

3. Medications

  • Antidepressants, hormone therapy, and certain fever-reducing drugs can cause sweating as a side effect.

4. Underlying Medical Conditions

  • Sleep Apnea: Interrupted breathing can stress the body, leading to sweating.
  • Cancer: Night sweats can be an early symptom of cancers like lymphoma.
  • Diabetes: Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) during sleep may trigger sweating.

5. Environmental Factors

  • A hot or poorly ventilated sleeping environment can contribute to excessive sweating.
  • Overuse of blankets or heavy clothing can trap heat and increase perspiration.
